Calendar of Events 2008 Events and times are subject to change. Please contact the Museum at (352) 378-2280 or info@mathesonmuseum.org prior to attending an event. Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans, Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Women's Studies at the University of Florida, will discuss her research on Black women in Florida higher education and compare past experiences with reflections from the newly released Telling Histories: Black Women Historians in the Ivory Tower (2008, Deborah Gray White, Ed.). Special attention will be paid to the Florida Historical Quarterly article "I Was One of the First to See Daylight" (Evans, 2006). This event will also celebrate the paperback release of Dr. Evans's book Black Women in the Ivory Tower, 1850-1954: An Intellectual History (University Press of Florida). A booksigning will follow the talk. The Matheson will host the Ocala Model Railroaders and their working train models as a part of cross-state programs and events honoring Senator David Levy Yulee and the railroad he built 150 years ago. Visit the Yulee Railroad Days website at www.yuleerailroaddays.org and the Ocala Model Railroaders website at www.ocalamodelrailroaders.com, for more information about this spectacular event. An accompanying exhibit about Florida trains will also be featured at the Museum. The exhibit will run from Tuesday, May 13 through Sunday, June 8, 2008. Don't miss this enriching experience of sights, sounds, and history! Our Calendar of Events is constantly changing. Please check back often for new updates to our schedule. |
